I'm confused...

is "lips" plural or singular?

Do you say "it was the lips" or "it were the lips"?

*can't continue to write if I don't know that... ;__;

"Was". Lips are a pair, even though they're plural, and one can't really do anything but itself, so "was". It would be the same for "feet" and "hands".

Illogical, no? And I complain about Japanese. :)

Thank you! That just cost me no amount of pain, not knowing which was correct.

*types on*

Little drabble coming up... :)

*scratches head* Normally, I would say "lips" should definitely be plural, but given your example I'd go with "it was the lips," though "the lips move", and to quote Giselle "lips are the only thing that touch."

In the end, I also went with the singular - "was the lips". It somehow 'felt' better when I was reading it out loud. Kind of strange how you sometimes suddenly get stumped right in the middle of a writing spree by something as deceptively simple as that. >.>
