My thermos blew up... >.>

I kid you not!

All I wanted was to make a nice thermos full of tea.

I put the powdered tea right into the thermos - something I've done hundreds of times! Then I poured it one thirds full of boiling water. And started to stir, to dissolve the powder.

...the thermos blew up! Or rather the glass inside did. As I was stirring.

Ye Gods! You can believe that I *instantly* transported myself to the other side of the kitchen. Or at least that's what it felt like. And I'm sure you could hear the scream all the way over in the next village.

Now the inside of my thermos consists of tiny pieces of silvered glass... >.>

And no tea.

I need a new thermos...

Oh! I hope you weren't hurt? At least within the thermos, the glass was contained except for very tiny pieces which got blown out of the surrounding metal.

Yes, I was stirring rather vigorously. Maybe that's what did it... >.>

I'm going to look for a steel one...

It must be gunpowder tea! Haa haa! Get it? Gunpowder...tea...

You almost killed me there! I had *just* taken a big swallow of my tea when I read this!

While I *do* have gunpowder tea in my tea collection, it was only a mix of lemon, ginger and hibiscus.

Anyyyway. Glad you're ok.
Must've been funny to see though. XD

So am I! >.>

Afterwards, yes. But for that moment, I was scared right out of my house-shoes.
Feb. 10th, 2011 07:43 pm (UTC)

Feb. 10th, 2011 08:56 pm (UTC)
That's scary. I didn't realise that a thermos can do that.

*hugs* Glad you're okay.
Feb. 10th, 2011 10:46 pm (UTC)
I guess it was the combination of heat and banging against the glass. I'm glad it was contained by the steel canister around it. Would have ended badly, if it hadn't.

Thank you! So am I! >.>

Um ... That usually happens, sooner or later, when you pour boiling water into at glass thermos. Stainless steel is a different matter.

If you're using a glass thermos, you should wait until the water is just simmering, pour some in the thermos and put the kettle back on. After the thermos has warmed, you can pour in all the boiling water you want.

I'm just glad the shell held it all together. So happy you weren't hurt. *hugs*
Feb. 11th, 2011 12:04 am (UTC)
I'd done it so often, I didn't think today would be any different. And I hadn't even put *all* the water in yet. Just a bit to dissolve the tea...

Yes, the shell was very sturdy. Thankfully! But the 'bang' was *very* loud! O.o Scared my cats right out of the kitchen...

So am I, so am I.

Glad you weren't hurt and that it helped bring out your awesome powers of teleportation. ;)
Feb. 11th, 2011 12:05 am (UTC)
It all stayed inside the steel shell. Thank the Gods!

I must have taken lessons from my cats! I *swear* they teleported right to the other end of the house! ^^;
Feb. 10th, 2011 11:33 pm (UTC)
Hmm, I didn't think the atmosphere over there was very different from here, but clearly it's quite explosive. :) Weird!
Feb. 11th, 2011 12:06 am (UTC)

Well, we have interesting weather phenomenon, so why not explosive atmospheres? ;);)

It was certainly *loud* enough. ^^;
Feb. 10th, 2011 11:49 pm (UTC)
*wince* I bet that was a hell of a shock! Amazing how fast our reflexes can be isn't it? Glad you're alright!
Feb. 11th, 2011 12:08 am (UTC)
Oh yes! I really found myself right on the other side of the kitchen, all crouched and guarding my face with my arms, by the time I'd realized what had happened.

I'm glad the shell contained it all. Otherwise I think I would have had to take a small trip to the hospital... because I would have resembled a silver pincushion. O.o

I gave up on glass pitchers after the second time I shattered one just by pouring in a hot liquid. And I had a glass bowl that I had microwaved a million times blow up in my microwave while heating up soup. Glad that there were no injuries to anything but the thermos though.
Feb. 11th, 2011 10:26 am (UTC)
In the microwave? O.o

Ok. I think I'm not going to put anymore glass bowls into the microwave. >.>

The thermos is thoroughly dead. ^^; Yes, I was very glad that I wasn't hurt. I was close enough that it would have been bad, if the steel shell hadn't held... >.>
Feb. 11th, 2011 03:20 am (UTC)
*hugs* I'm glad you're okay. That sounds really scary.
Feb. 11th, 2011 10:27 am (UTC)
It was! I think it took at least 15 minutes for me to stop shaking.

*HUG* Thank you! I'm glad that the steel shell was so sturdy! *wipes sweat off brow*
